So I lost my hard drive the other day. Yes the one with all my backups on! That one, that very one.
So after going through all the motions and trying all kinds of things, I found this article on Google about freezing your hard drive.
The story goes, the chips on the circuit board and the motor in the hard drive creates heat and most materials expand when heated. Freezing it causes these parts to shrink back to their normal orientation and it might just give you enough time to get that data off there.
Whether this works or not, I cannot say. I left the hard drive in the freezer overnight, but it didn’t work for me. Obviously you need to seal it in a zip lock and squeeze out as much air as possible to prevent condensation.
Try at your own risk! I take no responsibility. You can Google it however and see for yourself.
The beloved hard drive is with an IT guy now. Patiently awaiting word from him. If he manages to get the data off there, I will be sure to post about it.
There are companies out there that will charge you phenomenal fees to remove the actual platter and build it into a new casing. This has to be done in a dust free environment though. Maybe thats where the price comes in?
Suppose it all depends how valuable that data is!
