I was quite impressed when I saw my peyote flowering like crazy recently. Imagine how surprised I was when it started carrying fruit. The fruit look like small little berries. Now I just love these little cactii. I don’t grow them for any purpose like eating them for their psychedelic properties. They’re just cool. And I also like the idea that there is such a huge spiritual background to these little plants. Don Juan from “The Teachings of Don Juan” by Carlos Castaneda hold these little cactii in very high regard as according to him it enables you to speak to the peyote god, Mescalito.
So I have now dried out the fruit and harvested the seeds. I am no pro at harvesting peyote or growing peyote for that matter, but I also never expected it to carry fruit. I dried the berry like fruit out and got about 6 seeds from each fruit. I planted it in a mixture of compost and river sand. Not very deep and I give the soil a mist spray every day. Apparently they want to be kept at a temperature of about 25 – 30 degrees Celsius, so I left them in the sun and just make sure the soil does not dry out. Now we wait.
