Who doesn’t have a Facebook profile these days? Hands? Come on don’t be shy!
Yes don’t we all love our Facebook. It is quite an amazing concept. I have met people on there who I never thought I would see again in my life. In fact, at first I hardly recognise them from their profile pics.
But have you ever given any more thought to the whole thing, especially now that they are going to make the information available to the search engines. You post everything about yourself on there. Your name, surname, phone number, hobbies, interests, telephone number, what you do everyday, your relationships with people, how you’re related to them, the list goes on.
See, now I’ve got nothing against it, but lets just stop to think about it a bit. What if the government had a share in Facebook. The whole Big Brother theory suddenly comes back to mind. Oh yes, forgot about that? This is an interesting link someone emailed me the other day: ‘Does what happens in the Facebook, stay in the Facebook?‘
The scary thing for me is that they are now opening Facebook to the search engines. Have you changed your profile privacy settings?
Have a look at this story as well at this one. On that last one they give you this Google Search link of people who have already been posted on the Search Engines.
Personally, I don’t like the idea. You could probably find me on the net if you searched really hard, but to have all my information just so blatantly displayed is another story. As to the Big Brother theory, well at least we live in South Africa, I don’t think the CIA wil be looking for me!

Facebook launched on February 4, 2004, has accomplished more than most – going public in 2006 with 42 million active members worldwide and it expects to pass 60 million users by the end of the year – it increased its ranking from 60th to 7th most visited web site, and was the number one site for photos in the United States, ahead of public sites such as Flickr, with over 8.5 million photos uploaded daily.
These are statistics that any company, webmaster, or individual would commit multiple murder for…so all I have to say is – if there is a big brother – thank you… to the creators of facebook – respect.
Thank %uck you can turn the notifications off!
