Dagwood’s – Port Elizabeth

In Cape Rd., Central, Port Elizabeth, there is a place called Dagwood’s. Me and my wife went there for a pub lunch the other day and was so impressed that we returned last night with our friends. The staff makes you feel very welcome the minute you walk in the door. It is situated in a double-storey building, so the smoking section is up stairs. None of that smokers in a little aquarium stuff.
Service is fast, even thought the poor waitress has to run up a flight of stairs for everything.

What I really liked is that they have my favourite beer on tap, Mitchell’s Lager. Their prices are very reasonable and the portions are absolutely humongous, so go hungry!

The food is really good. One complaint I had though was that the snails I had for a starter did not have any garlic. Even though it still tasted good. The waitress said afterwards that apparently it is supposed to have garlic.
I had an eisbein for my main course. Was absolutely delicious. Prepared to perfection, with enough left over for lunch today.

After we finished our meal, we went downstairs for some Tequilas and another drink or two at the pub. There was a one man band playing. He was ok, I suppose it takes guts to stand up there all by yourself.

Overall a good time was had by all and I would most definitely recommend this place to any one seeking a good wholesome meal and some place to chill with friends.

  1. I have to agree! We were so impressed that we returned again last night with my brother! He was so impressed that he plans to eat there every night! The staff are very friendly, the food is delish and very reasonably priced. I would recommed Dagwood to anyone!

  2. I have to agree! Had an awesome time, service was wonderful, never had to look for the waiter and she also not in your face the whole time. Food was delectable and priced right.
Looking forward to my next meal there!

  3. People do not realize how poorly waitrons are treated in those “great service” places like the infamous dagwoods. Next time you are there pay closer attention to your waitron and might be able to see the abuse, disrespect, humiliation and trauma management imposes on the poor staff… for R8.46 an hour.

  4. Dagwoods is awesome, food is great, my favourite is there huge chicken shnitzel, really delicious (try their huge burgers too, and go hungry) .Ive never been disapointed and dont think I ever will be. I recommened Dagwoods to any body looking for great food , great service and and overall really cool atmosphere. Want a great night out with freinds, head down to Dagwoods.

  5. In response to disgusted…
I’ve been a local at Dagwoods since it first opened it’s door’s, and I still frequent the pub at least twice weekly. I have watched managers and waitrons’s come and go in this place, and one thing I know for sure is that the Dagwoods team demand alot from their staff, hence the reason for the service levels being above average for what you would expect from a “normal” pub!
If you got shouted at honey, ten to one you asked for it! Laziness is NOT in Dagwoods vocab! One waitress confided in me that the stairs were her own personal trainer! It’s a hell of a flight to run up!
So to you “disgusted”… If you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen! You should’nt be a waitress, maybe a quaint little coffee-shop would suit you better…
